Job scam targets Chinese grads

May 2008

A lot of my writing experience in the last six years has come from working in student media at two different tertiary institutions. This story was written for In Unison, the student magazine at Unitec New Zealand, where I was responsible for the news pages.

I was approached to write a news story about a recruitment company that was reported to have been advertising jobs for Chinese students on campus, only to charge them for the employment – illegal in New Zealand.

I interviewed a student who had unwittingly been involved in the scam, and worked with a colleague to obtain information from Unitec’s Career and Employment Centre.

This story received an honourable mention at the 2008 Aotearoa Student Press Association (ASPA) awards: “Great work… you worked the source well and backed it up with thorough reporting. It was a very relevant story and a great scoop.”
